Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Pacemaker Being Fitted, Aortic Valve Replacement, Had Bacterial Infection. Done ECG. Will It Make Difference?
I'm having a pacemaker fitted tomorrow, just feeling a bit worried about it all.I'm 46 years old in good health apart from a serious bacterial infection of my heart three years ago which resulted in a emergency aortic valve replacement.Since my recovery I've had problems with palpitations and near fainting episodes especially this year.My cardiologist carried out various tests and could not find out anything to suggest I had a problem until having worn a portable ECG unit for two weeks he found I had a momentary pause in my heart rhythm. He consulted with another cardiologist and they came to the conclusion a pacemaker would be the appropriate treatment for me.As I,ve already said just feeling a bit worried about what to expect and how the pacemaker will improve my quality of life.
Thanks for your question. These days, implantation and cares of a pacemaker have become quite simple and friendly for the patient, the procedure is considered routine, with less than 1% of serious complications and can certainly improve your quality of life if you were having symptoms directly caused by slow heart rates or pauses.
Yours truly,
Dr Brenes-Salazar MD Cardiology Mayo Clinic MN
