Pain And Numbness In The Back, Stiffness In The Wrists After Childbirth. What Is Wrong?

I have always had back problems since I have a kids. When I had my daughter 19 months ago I had back labor even with drugs I felt everything in my back. It felt like my daughter was pulling a knife down my back as she was being born. Since then My back has gotten worse. When I sit, even for a few mins standing is painful and I cant strieghten my back out for a few. Some times when I bend to help my daughter I get a painful numbing feeling and have to stand straight right away. Also Once in a while I get sharp pain in my arms that feels like its in my bone, it last a min or so then goes away. I do have stiffness in my wrists and elbow. What is going on? please help I have a few active baby and we love to be outside.

Pain Medicine & Palliative Care Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Backache following childbirth is relatively and can be very limiting when you have a young child to look after.
I would suggest you see a physiotherapist who can assess your back and other painful joints with a view to advice on appropriate exercises. These may strengthen you core and back muscles and ulitmately result in a reduction in pain and stiffness.
For pain relief, I suggest you try paracetamol and ibuprofen.
Regards.

Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist Faiza's  Response
Hello
You had your delivery with drugs like epidural or other pain killers please mention that, and if you had the epidural when your cervix dilation's were around 6-10 cm then there would be no effect of the medicine and that might be the reason you had experienced such a bad pain. And you mentioned that when sit or stand you are experiencing very worse pain there might be
1.you sciatic nerve might have got compressed (sciatica) during pregnancy that might the reason for numbness
2. your lower back muscles are weak or have undergone stress &tear
3. you might have ligaments laxity because of wear and tear of the joints during pregnancy
for the lower back pain you can do some lower back straightening excersie or yoga and
1.apply hot or cold compress packs to relive pain
2.Change your position while lifting your baby instead of bending forward ,bend down or make comfortable accordingly.
for numbness please consult a orthopedic or a physiotherapist.
for the pain in the arm you may have deficiency of calcium or sometimes it might be psychological, and for the stiffness in wrists and elbow engage in some good physical activity like walking ,swimming these may help you.
hope you get well soon.
