Pain In Hip Radiating To Leg, Knee, Ankle, Trouble Sleeping. On Anti Inflammatory Ointment. Suggested Possible Bursitis. Guide

I have been suffering with pain in left hip that radiates all the way down to left side of my leg from below the knee to the top of my ankle. I saw my family doctor only once and he prescribed an anti inflammatory ointment. At the time he siad it was probably bursitis. Shouldn't it have healed by now? It has become very painful. I have also been having a lot of trouble sleeping and am up and down a lot. I am 67 years old and besides that am in relatively good heath. I am thin, try to eat healthy, but exercise very little except for housework. I am worried this could be cancer. I am seeing my family doctor on Monday , but am a worrier by nature. What 's the best short term treatment for this until I have further tests?

Hello,

I would very much agree with your decision to get yourself evaluated as soon as possible.

With the presentation you are describing with pain running down your knee to the ankle, i feel that, this is doubtfully a bursitis.

I would not jump to a conclusion of cancer, though that is, never the less a part of the differential list for you.

You should be evaluated for pathologies of hip and lower back with neurological involvement.

As we don't have a clear cut idea of what is going on till we reach a definitive diagnosis. I don't think there is any other way than painkillers and antiinflammatory medications to keep pain under control till now. Or you may get a proscription of opiod painkillers under supervision on your family physician.

And try to avoid painful positions and habits.

Hope this helps !

Best wishes for recovery.
