Sciatica as it is commonly called is pressure on the nerve as it comes through the back bone. It is very painful condition and needs patient and prolonged treatment. My suggestion to you is specifically choose an orthopedic surgeon who is based near your home city/town and follow his/her advice meticulously. In general, if your mother overweight she has to loose weight. Use of hard bed and avoiding certain movements of spine and rationale use of analgesics is the main stay. If prolapse of intervertebral disc is suspected additional x-rays or CT scan may be required and there could be need for traction and bed rest. Therefore, the need to consult a specialist.
