I had a pap smear today. However, it was very painful this time. I have been celibate for 8 years. The doctor said the pain I felt today was not due to celibacy. She stated that my cervix points/tilts up and it was difficult for her to visualize it thru the speculum. So she had to manuever it a bit (this was the painful part). How did my cervix get tilted...I don t remember going through this before. I am 40 years old I ve had over 30 paps in my lifetime.
Normal position of cervix and uterus is anteverted position. In 20 % of normal individuals it could be retroverted as well.
Some conditions such as endometriosis, fibroid tumors as well as pelvic adhesions can cause misalignment of the uterus resulting in retroversion of the uterus. This results in tilted cervix as well.
Get a ultrasound abdomen to rule out the same.
