Painful Lumps On The Side Of The Spine When Pressed?

My son has 4 lumps under his skin. one in his forearm and one in his thigh. These are not a problem. 2 are in his mid back at the waist area on both sides of his spine. The MD said they are fatty cysts and not to worry, but his back hurts at those two spots. Should he ask for an ultra sound or MRI? He feels like they are pressing on the vertebrate. and if he presses on them or leans back they hurt. Thanks
