I would suggest you to go for Re-RCT because there is some vital part still left in canal & because of which you are experiencing pain.At the same time, i think your previous crown can work & doesn't require a new crown if cutting is not done on your teeth.Rest all can be judged after clinical examination.

according to your history this is very clear that tooth had undergone RCT treatment several times.
usually in reRCT cases chances are not very bright.
as tooth is again infected & your dentist is saying that he can preserve this than may be he has noticed some untreated canal so you can go for treatment but always one thing should be kept in mind that chances are always relatively less.

After going through your history i suggest you to get the root canal treatment done for your infected tooth from an endodontist, a specialist in root canal procedures.
Getting new crowns over the tooth will not solve the problem as the problem is not with the crown placement but is with the vital canal in the tooth that is left unexplored.
If its a molar tooth upper or lower , it will have 3 or sometimes 4 canals , they need to be explored , cleaned , shaped and filled till the apex , this procedures devitalises the tooth completely ans it seals the apex of the tooth from the surrounding tissues so there is no question of pain and infection to the tooth once the root canal is done properly. then you can go ahead for crown coverage over the tooth just to give mechanical strength to the tooth to withstand biting forces. Re exploring the canals and removing the infection will only subside your symptoms.

Root canal treatment is required in this case.

I would suggest you to visit an endodontist.(specialist for rct)

All the canals has to be properly located,cleaned aseptically,prepared and then filled.

Therefore visit your endodontist and get re rct done.

Remember,you will not have pain as now a days painless technique is followed.

Further a suitable new prosthetic crown has to be placed.

Pain in the root canal treated tooth can be because of imcompletely treated tooth, re-infection, food lodgement between the tooth and crown .

I would suggest you to get an x-ray done .
go for re-rct if required.
Get complete mouth scaling and polishing done.
Take antibiotic and analgesic for pain relief
Antibiotic and analgesic will give temporaray relief
Unless the tooth is devatilised , disinfected and sealed to the apex you may experience pain and infection.

There are a number of possible causes of pain after the completion of a root canal. After a root canal is completed no living pulp tissue remains inside the tooth, but nerve endings remain in the ligaments that attach the tooth to the surrounding bone. These ligaments have nerve fiber associated with them that can feel pain. They are the source of any post root canal pain.

visit the dentist and get an IOPAR done and plan yor reatment according to that.

This inflammation may be due to extruded sealer or 'over instrumentation during the endodontic procedure. Sometimes the root canal files go past the apical terminus and can either inject some debris periapically or just damage the ligaments. This inflammation usually resolves by itself given enough time.
If a root canal is completed, but an infection still is present around the periapical area then a retreatment may be indicated especially if significant time has gone by without a resolution of the infection.
