Post Menopausal. Having Severe Hot Flashes. On Medicines For Different Conditions. Could It Be Due To The Diet?

Female post menopausal, with heat intolerance that is making me miserable. I have high blood pressure and diabetic which are both controlled by oral meds. I am overweight but this problem was the same when I wasn't. I take simvastatin, losartan, lipofen, Cymbalta for nerve pain, gabapentin occasionally, metformin, and metaxalone occasionally for back spasms. I have nerve damage from two failed back surgeries. Could diet have affect on my being hot all the time? I am at wits end. Had blood work up but no red flags on thyroid or any connective tissue disease.

Dear patient.
Greetings from health care magic!!! I am Dr Thakker and shall be answering your question.

I very well understand your concern for the post menopausal hot flashes. I will try my best to answer your question and find a solution for your problem.

Post menopausal hot flashes occur because of drop in the estrogen and progesterone levels in the blood after menopause. These are not related to the drugs you are taking for diabetes, blood pressure, dyslipidemia and neuropathy. Diet has a very small contributory role. Eating spicy food can exaggerate the hot flashes.

I would suggest the following for the hot flashes:

1) Use of air conditioners as and when required to avoid hot flashes.

2) Hormone replacement therapy is beneficial to reduce the frequency of hot flashes.

3) SERMS like Raloxifene are helpful to reduce the frequency of hot flashes.

4) Avoid eating spicy food.

You have ruled out thyroid disease already with your blood tests.

I hope this helps you out. If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to write back to me.

Yours sincerely,
Dr Thakker.
