Postmenopausal, Tender Breasts, Had Bleeding, Cramps. Never Been On HRT. Why Am I Passing Blood Clots?

Am 58 years old and have been postmenopausal for 2.5 years. Recently, my breasts were extremely tender for about a week. When the tenderness went away, I got a period the following day. I bled for about a week (light to medium flow). Bleeding stopped for 2 days then returned for another 7 to 10 days. Again very light with some mild abdominal cramping and tiny clots passing. The bleeding stopped again. This time for about 5 days. Then began lightly with the passing of small dime sized clots on occasion. I am experiencing mild cramping on occasion. I have never been on HRT, and am not overweight. During perimenopause, my periods were often irregular, heavy (even flooding on a few occasions) with the passing of very large clots. Any idea what could be causing this?

Hi,
Thanks for the query.
Postmenopausal bleeding to be carefully evaluated.
So, with your doctor's advice go for ultrasound to note the endometrial pattern.
Then depending on the findings, in case of increased endometrial thickness go for D&C.
This will help for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes.
In case of normal thickness of endometrium, go for endometrial biopsy.
By this the possible cause for bleeding can be identified.
Sonomammogram is needed to rule out any abnormality in the breast.
Depending on the above findings further management can be planned.
In case of any abnormality in the endometrium, better to go for hysterectomy.
Take care.
