Pregnancy Ultrasound Showing Abnormal Stomach Size. Will It Affect The Weight Of The Baby?
Hi -- I am just over 30 weeks, and had an ultrasound this morning to check up on growth. I'm 41 yrs old. The technician said all was normal except the stomach is just slightly above 90th percentile (I believe she said 1 mm above?). I was checked for gest'l diabetes a few weeks back and told I was fine. All other measurements all along have been fine. What does the large stomach mean? Does it mean the child could have weight issues or ? Should I worry or do anything? I'm not scheduled to see by Dr. again for 2 weeks, and panicking a little. Thanks.
Dear user, welcome to healthcare magic. The range of stomach dimensions is wide and variable, but I will tell you what to do. First there is nothing to worry about right now because the stomach size (although enlarged) is still within the normal range. Also there are no other associated anomalies or abnormal excessive water around the baby. So, I suggest that you should repeat the scan after a couple of weeks and mostly the stomach size will be normal. There are causes for increased stomach size such as pyloric stenosis or presence of a membranous antral web (very rare incidence and not in your case). In such cases the stomach is abnormally enlarged and there is excessive liquor (water) around the baby. Actually I have seen many pictures of an enlarged stomach and at the end the babies were fine. If after the next scan you need to clarify more information please let me know. Good luck. Dr. Ahmed Bahaa.
