Pregnant, Sore Throat, Coughing Up Green Phlegm. Advised Amoxicillin. Is It Safe?
I am 5-6weeks pregnant. Had bad sore throat. Thought it was strep so saw an urgent care doc over the weekend. He has RX ed Amoxicillin 500mg and adviced to take them if my symptoms worsens. the sore throat is better but I am coughing till I gag and now couphing up green phlegm. Possible bacterial bronchitis....Should I take Amoxicillin so can this go away on its own? I can t sleep due to the severity of cough. If bacterial, can it harm my fetus?
It is possible that it is bacterial bronchitis but most cases of bronchitis are viral even in the presence of the coloured discharge, it does not necessarily mean it is bacterial. If you have a high persisting fever then it is possible that it may be bacterial.
If this is the case then you can use the antibiotics , they are used in pregnancy and should not affect the baby.
If the infection is bacterial then it would not affect the baby.
You need to rest where possible, drink alot of fluids which would decrease the viscosity of the secretions.
I hope this helps
