Prescribed Lisinipril. Allergic To Sulpha Drugs. Any Drug That Controls HBP Without Causing Voice Loss And Reflux Problems?

I am taking 50 mg. of Toprol and have been prescribed Lisinipril for HBP. Within 3-4 days of taking this drug, I lost my voice. The doctor and the pharmacist both knew I was allergic to sulfa drugs. I then was prescribed Losartan. Within 3-4 days of taking this drug, I have lost my voice almost completely. I have severe LPR and take Nexium, but the Losartan is wreaking havoc with my GERD. Is there another drug that would help control my HBP without causing voice loss and reflux problems?

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

Firstly, none of the prescribed drugs are sulpha drugs.

You may switch over from Losartan to Amlodipine in titrating doses to control your blood pressure, which would relieve you of your problems. Continue Toprol.

Further, GERD is most commonly due to infection of the stomach by a bacteria (called H.pylori).

A 2-weeks' course of anti-H.pylori therapy (available in the form of kits); followed by 3-4 months of Nexium- will cure your GERD permanently.

Loss of voice is probably due to recurrent reflux of stomach acid. Saline gargles (with 4 spoons of salt in a glass of hot water) 3-4 times a day should help bringing back your voice. Consult an ENT doctor, if the problems persist.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he agree with me, order required tests, and- based on the reports- will prescribe suitable treatment as advised.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE all doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.
