Puppy Dog Vaccinated With Rabies Shot, Often Playbites But Never Through The Skin. Can He Still Transmit Rabies?

I am surprised the advice to get a rabies shot always when a puppy or house dog bites or scratches. In my country the netherlands most dogs are not vaccinated but we also have almost no rabies cases. My puppy is vaccinated with rabies shot, but can he still transmit rabies? Hi
Welcome to HCM

The pre-exposure schedule for rabies vaccination is 3 doses, given at the following times:
Dose 1: As appropriate
Dose 2: 7 days after Dose 1
Dose 3: 21 days or 28 days after Dose 1

Even though your pet is vaccinated i advice you for pre exposure vaccination. Animal should get their booster every year.

Animal should get their booster on time. There is very slim chance of animal getting infected after vaccination, even to cover these pre exposure will be good.

Hope i have provided the information you needed.

Take care.

Dear saskiaeurlings,

Rabies is a zoonotic disease (a disease that is transmitted to humans from animals) that is caused by a virus. The disease infects domestic and wild animals, and is spread to people through close contact with infected saliva via bites or scratches.

There is no vaccine which will protect every individual to which it is given. Even rabies vaccination does not protect every animal from rabies. For certain diseases, it is not necessary to protect 100% of the individuals to prevent an outbreak of the disease.

Research studies have shown that if 70% of dogs in a population are immune to rabies, the occurrence of rabies drops to about zero.

According my knowledge rabies eradicated from US and Australia. There may be some other countries which I do not know.I don't know about Netherlands.
