Recovering From Ischemic Stroke. Using Diaper. Reddish Rash. Fungal Infection?
my mom had ischmic stoke last week and now in ICU on diaper, two days ago, she starts to develop red spot on the diaper area thinking they are diaper rash and was prescribed zinc oxide ointment. but today the rash becomes red spots and seems with white heads and the doctor suspects they are fungal infection. i would like to have second opinion on this
Hi , your mother is having candidal infection, a fungal infection. That is due to perspiration. Give her antifungal tab. ketoconazole once a day for about 2 weeks. Apply clotrimazole powder frequently . Swab the the area with antiseptic liquid like dettol. I hope she will be benifitted with this much treatment.. Ok
Hi thanks for writing here.It could be either a fungal infection or a diaper dermatitis.since your mother is bed ridden urine and faeces irritate the skin ,skin becomes inflamed with secondary infection with bacteria and fungus.Keep area dry and clean, use antifungal dusting powder, clean area with water and liqiud soap, change diaper frequently, apply steroid antifungal combination like candiid b cream over affected area.I hope this can solve your query.thanks.
Hello,
Welcome to healthcare magic
Diapers can cause diaper dermatitis. But your description of red spots with white heads sounds like satellite pustules of candidiasis, which is a fungal infection. Treatment with antifungal cream like ketoconazole 2% twice a day and fluconazole tablets will definitely help.
Even an irritant contact dermatitis like diaper dermatitis can cause such a rash but your doctor has suspected candidiasis and it is better to treat for that.
Precautions which can be followed are changing the diaper once it is soaked. Faeces and urine are irritants and the longer it touches the skin the more chance of diaper rash. Do not rub and clean. Once diaper is removed skin has to be cleaned with wet cloth and then mop dry. You may apply coconut oil or petroleum jelly after cleaning so that barrier function of skin is maintained.
Hope this helped.
Take care
