Recurring Sharp Shooting Pains In Anus, Colonoscopy Needed?
HI im 18 and female, I have been experiencing short sharp shooting pains in my rectum/ anus area for a long time. Ive been to embarassed to say anything to anyone but they have been gradually getting worse. They only last for a few seconds but are very uncomfortable and sometimes make me cry out in pain. I mentioned them to a doctor before and she couldn t find any obvious signs of being wrong but said I may need a colonoscopy if they carried on but I didn t want to go back. what should I do?

The shooting pain which lasts for short duration are of neurological origin. All investigation in rectum, anus and in vagina will be normal. Colposcopy may not be helpful. You may need an MRI of spine to rule out any compression of spinal cord or nerve root which may cause the pain. A spine surgeon must be consulted for your relief. There is nothing to get embarrassed to convey your symptoms to a doctor. All the best.

this condition is called proctalgia fugax
its exact etiology is not known but it occurs in young adults
you should try warm sitz bath by sitting in water tub, relaxation technique of anal sphincter and should avoid tension
