Severe Pain In The Ankle After An Injury. Sprain Diagnosed. Throbbing And Swelling In The Leg. Worried About Fracture

fell off a pallet onto sharp rocks. Ankle turned in and out. felt what I would call a snap on Left than right of ankle. thought I broke it. EXTREME sharp pain on 2 spots on top outer sides of my foot and left side of high upper ankle and pulling throb straight up the back of my ankle to almost back of knee. Went to ER got xrays of my foot doc did no exam and said no visible breaks you can go home. I told him it was so horrible of pain & even the back of my leg hurt. He did not examine feel look at my foot or ankle at all. he did have me lay on my belly and did an acillis tendon test very quick & said nope your fine. Nurse came & told me doc told her to treat it as a 2nd or 3rd degree sprain. No weight bearing at all, crutches, ice, iboprophen and follow up with regular doc immediately (its memorial day weekend). I'm in horrible pain~ its so sharp at both the inside & outside bones that stick out round on my ankle and top of left side of foot (bone that runs to 2nd to baby toe) and sharp throb outside of leg about mid point ankle to knee and back of leg. My leg is about 3x's the size swollen up to top of knee and there is a lot of bruising and some straight dark lines on the outer side of the top & side of my foot. Also when I turn at the waist it sends a sharp hurt down the back of my leg to ankle. Do you think it could be fractured or I could have torn something? The nurse said xrays can only tell if bones are broken but cant see the ligaments & tendons so they have no idea if I hurt those. Help

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome at HCM.

I have read your question.

Your nurse had given you right input. It may be possible that you had not a fracture but a ligament injury.Pain of ligament injury is as severe as of a fracture.

If it is a grade 2 or 3 ligament injury then it will be better for you to have a brace or below knee slab. This will help in immobilizing the part. This will also add an environment for good healing of ligaments.
At present you should also take a good analgesic like advil for relief.

Hope this will help you.

With best wishes.
