Severe Pain, Swelling In Knee. Non Smoker. How Long To Heal?

I am a 77 year old female who developed severe pain and swelling in my left knee one week ago. I am now waiting for the results of an X-ray taken today - no fall or knock. This is a first episode, I am a non-smoker, takes the occasional glass of wine and walks almost daily for an hour so most days and maintain a healthy diet. Have been blessed with good health most of my life and I am wondering whether this is likely to clear up.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
I am suspecting osteoarthritis based on your symptoms which is common in your age. It can be easily managed by non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs and calcium supplements. I suggest hot fomentation for the knee with application of an over the counter analgesic gel to reduce the pain for now.
Please wait for the x ray results and then get in touch with a rheumatologist for appropriate therapy.
Rest the knee as much as possible.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Thanks.
