Hi. I used to apply Benzac AC and Faceclina before for acne. I have also been on Accutane for a year and a half. But recently I have started to break out again and have been prescribed Epiduo gel and Azibact tablets by my dermatologist for treatimg my acne. However, its making my skin all the more oily and causing more breakouts. Should I go back to using Benzac?
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic
The topical medicine that you are currently on actually does contain benzoyl peroxide in combination with topical retinoid i.e adapalene. The acne flare that you have right now might be due to topical adapalene use. This is a known side effect of adapalene where previously unseen lesions come up to the surface. The flare is actually a good sign that the medicine is working and usually subsides on its own on continued usage. Yes, the skin does become oily specially early in therapy with adapalene because adaplene is comedolytic, therefore, the blockages are removed and hence the oil which was pent up earlier, flows out. If I was the treating doctor I would have added another topical antibiotic for the acne flare i.e clindamycin for day time use. You can discuss more about these points with your treating doctor. I am sure he would ask you to be patient with the treatment for a little more while before you start noticing improvement in your acne
