Should I Be Worried Of Abnormal Pap Result?

I am 22 years old. Just found out my annual pap was "abnormal". I have an appointment in three weeks. I have a regular period and have been on the pill since high school. I've had slight cramping, nausea but goes away. Also headaches but that's normal for me sometimes, should I be scared?

Hi,

Abnormal Pap smear are very common. It might be due to cervical or vaginal infection and the causative agents could be HPV (human papilloma virus) or sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes or yeast infections.

All the above mentioned conditions are easily treatable. There are millions of documented cases with abnormal smear, among which only less than 1% are cancerous.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Yogapriya Vasudevan, General & Family Physician
