Should The Contraceptive Pills Be Continued After The Menstruation?

I'm on birth control pills, and decided to skip the menstruation period, because I'm going on vacation. However I forgot to take my pill on the second day of what would have been my period (the second day of the fourth week). Do I really need to use another form of birth control for the next week, or am I still protected because I've taken the pills regularly for past three weeks ? As far as I'm concerned the menstruation is supposed to be a safe period to have sex even though you don't take the pills those seven days.
