Soft Pouch Of Fluid Above Incision Post Hernia Repair, Was Given Platelet Infusion During Surgery. Normal?

My husband had a hernia repair surgery five days ago. He developed a large soft pouch of fluid above the incision called something that starts with hemi....the surgeon said to keep ice packs on the area, and it should absorb in to the tissues, or leak from incision, within two to three weeks ! He has a platelet problem, but was given a Platelet infusion during surgery. His whole side area , as well as, pelvic area, including genitals, are now deep purple and swollen. Is this a usual result from this surgery ? We ve both had them before, without this outcome.

hi there, it is good reason to be concerned. If your husband had a bleeding disorder then you need to first get it checked whether his platelet counts are normal now or not and his PT and APTT levels are within normal limits or not. He could be bleeding in the wound and developing a hematoma which normally would get absorbed in due course of time but if your husband has a bleeding disorder then it may be serious and needs to be addressed. Kindly get a second opinion after the blood workup. Do not wait for it to resolve on its own. Take care.
