Sore Around Lips, Tongue, Mouth, Burning Sensation, Hurts Jaw Bones, Unable To Were Dentures. Treatment?

My mother is 93 years old. Since December she has not been able to wear her dentures. Her mouth is sore inside especially around the lips, tip of her tongue, on the bottom of her mouth. Has now started hurting in her jaw bone area. She feel a burning sensation throughout this whole area. We have seen her primary care Doctor, a dentist and a dermatologist. When you look inside her mouth no one can see any reason for these sensations.

Hello,
we are here to help you.
As the age of your mother is considered, there must be significant bone loss of the jaws. In such case there are two possibilities

one is because of the bone loss dentures looses the support from bone thus its stability is lost which causes the impingement of denture borders on underlying tissues. This results in continuous trauma and ulcers in that area. which is causing soreness and burning sensation.

In such cases the dentures has to be relieved in the areas where it's hurting the tissues or it has to be replaced by new dentures.

also Dologel CT should be applied ( pea sized drop of gel) to the ulcers with single use cotton tip or clean finger tip before food or as needed;

tablet of 20mg each of Vitamin C and flavanoids three times a day is helpful.

you have not mentioned medical history of the patient, because the ulcers can be caused by some medications like for heart problems, antibiotics, pain killers, etc in such cases you should visit the physician to make modification in treatments.

secondly as per you said that she is having burning sensation and when looked in mouth no sign is seen this can be because of impingement of denture on the nerve.

If any such patient would come to me I would suggest X-ray (OPG) of the jaws and check for the position of nerve in relation to the bone, and accordingly the correction in denture is made.
If the nerve is found closer to the bone then I would go for reposition of the nerve.

so my advice is please visit your dentist and get x-ray done.

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

According to your clinical symptoms i suppose that your mother has developed a condition called as burning mouth syndrome, it includes dry mouth, metallic taste tingling and numbness in mouth.

Maintain a good oral hygiene for her.
Ask her to drink plenty of water for proper hydration of her body.
You can give her nutriotonal suplements like vitamin B12.
Relive depression and anxiety if any.

Hope you find this as helpful,

Regards..

Hello,

In elderly oral lesions are mainly due to vitamin deficiencies due to lack of appitite.
You may need to evaluate her for any vitamin deficienies like Vitamin B, C etc.. and treat with vitamin supplements. Some times the oral lesions are manifestation for some systemic diseases. Lastly if infections are present it needs to be treated with antibiotics and antifungal.
