Sore Hip, Swelling On Upper Thigh Below The Hip. On Paracetamol And Ibuprofen. History Of Fall From Ladder Landing On Left Side. Possible Hematoma?

Hi. My husband had a fall from a ladder at a height of around 3 meters this morning at 1o am ish. He landed on his left side and is complaining of a sore hip. He carried on at work as usual and has come home with a rather large swelling on his upper left thigh below the hip. I am assuming this is like a heamatoma? We have iced and evlevated and he has taken paracetamol and ibuprofen for the pain. Is it best to compress this with a Tubi Girp style bandage for the night? Many Thanks

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

As per the description, your husband could have suffered a soft tissue contusion resulting in hematoma formation.

The general treatment guidelines for hematoma are as follows -

* Rest to the injured part and don’t involve in activities which puts additional strain on the injured tissues.
* Ice packing should be applied for about 20 minutes once in every 2 hours.
* Use elastic compression bandage around the swollen area (tubi grip can be used)
* Elevation of the limb
* Analgesic & anti inflammatory medications like Advil or Aleve as needed

If the symptoms are not resolving with the above measures, consult your family physician.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Hello,

The swelling may be most likely due to hematoma but injury of this nature may cause damage to the musculoskeletal as well as neurovascular structures.
Consult your doctor for an MRI of the area to rule out injury to the major structures which may give rise to complications on a later date.
