Sore Neck Due To Mass On Sternocleidomastoid. No Relief With Stretching And Rubbing Muscles. What Could It Be?

Hello,
I am a twenty one year old healthy male. Two mornings ago I woke up and had a sore neck. I started feeling my neck and discovered it is my sternocleidomastoid that is sore and tight. With further examination I found there is a round mass on the sternocleidomastoid at the top of the muscle (close to the ear). So for three days I have been rubbing and stretching the muscle with no relief. The mass is the same size, and extremely painful. The muscle is so tight it makes the back of my head hurt. Where the muscle attaches to the skull. The mass is about the size of a golf ball. Is this a muscle know or could it be something else?

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what you have been experiencing. from the description, this resembles a swollen lymph gland and not probably related to the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Swollen lymph nodes are often associated with infections around its drainage area. Please, check and make sure you do not have any cold, sore throat or ear pain a these are the most common causes of swollen and painful lymph nodes around the neck. PAin medications would offer some relief and treatment of the cause would take complete care of it.

If the cause is obvious from the above information, then pain medications alone would help. If you cannot tell till, then please consider visiting a doctor for examination.

I hope you find this helpful and it addresses your query fully. Thank you so much for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. I wish you the best of health.
