Staph And Fungal Infection In Sinus Following A Sinus Surgery. Can This Cause Brain Abscess?

I have recently had sinus surgery and had a bad staph infection along with a fungal problem in the sinus itself. After surgery I was diagnosed with achromobacter infection in the sinus. The doctor treating me said that Sulfa would take care of this infection but as I am allergic to Sulfa I am to have IV infusion therapy. What is this type of infection and is it serious? I was also told that if I did not take care of it ASAP that I might get a brain abscess. Is this true?

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

Achromobacter is a bacteria. Achromobacter infection can spread all over the body, by the blood circulation, if not treated promptly with antibiotics to which this bacteria is sensitive to. Use of antibiotics- to which the bacteria is resistant- will not only delay recovery, but can also aggravate the infection.

Yes. It can extend to the base of the brain (and cause brain abscess) through direct extension or, spread also to the other organs of the body, through spread by blood circulation. However, since you are already on IV antibiotics, I am highly optimistic that you recover uneventfully.

The ideal course of action is to subject the bacteria to sensitivity test, which will short-list the MOST EFFECTIVE antibiotics. Use of one of them would facilitate early recovery. I am sure that your treating doctor has already sent the infected material for culture and sensitivity test.
