Started To Look Like Manly, Have Body Fat And Muscular Body. Have PCOS, High Insulin, Tumor In Pituitary, Migraines. What Now?

Ok here's a quick history. I'm 19. 5'1. Ever since I was a kid I've always had a really solid muscular physique with very lite body fat. I've never been able to gain weight (fat) its always muscle. I had big hands and feet, tom boyish and i start growing body hair at an early age as well. It raised a question in my parents but they never took It serious. As I got older. I started to notice I was putting on alot of mass. I don't work out at all so this was strange. My face stated changing.i looked more bigger and manly and ppl started to notice. So I recently went to an Endo because I started feeling like I was literally trapped in my own body. When I went I told her my concerns and she didn't think anything was wrong until she ran my hormones and I had PCOS. My testostrone was and insilin were very high. Now she's testing me for acrogegaly which I think is the bigger issue. I have all the symptoms. My question is there is a tumor on my pituitary do hands and feet shrink after the surgery and will my body be normal? Oh I've also had Scoliosis surgery when I was 12. There's a rod in my back and I have horrible migraines everyday.

Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

Thank you for the detailed history, such details help a lot.

Let me concentrate on your concerns one by one.

Starting with PCOS, which plays a major role in making you look manly. PCOS is a condition which causes a hormonal imbalance in women, resulting in an increase in the male hormones, which play their role in making the individual look manly, irrespective of his/her sex. This condition also suppresses the female hormones, which might have resulted in symptoms like irregular periods, weight gain, etc; although you have not mentioned some of these, I am sure they are present. So, by correcting the condition, we can really help restore your female characteristics, and the return of a more regular period will also greatly help. Weight loss is prime in controlling PCOS, so please work on losing weight. All this, along with the right medications, will surely help. Please refrain from strenuous exercise, and stick to a more mild/light exercise regimen, as a more strenuous regimen can also result in an increase in the production of male hormones.

Now coming to your direct queries. Tumor of the pituitary gland can result in an increase in production of growth hormone, yes. But, there are other conditions that can cause this as well, so only proper investigations can rule out a tumor and find the cause for hyperstimulation of the pituitary.

No, your hands and feet will not shrink after correction, we can only prevent further progression/growth by correction. I am sure you will grow into your body and look beautiful and normal.

Migraines are associated with corrective surgery for scoliosis, unfortunately, only proper knowledge on the condition, and recognizing the symptoms of the pre-migraine headache and aura can help. These appear before the migraine; during which if you take your medication, you can help yourself by completely preventing the migraine attack.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications at: http://doctor.healthcaremagic.com/doctors/dr-shoaib-khan/64581 . I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
