Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 7 weeks post colectomy . Off pain meds except for occasional Tylenol . Eating and drinking regularly. Was on Miralax until 2 days ago to help with constipation from Vicodene. Have noticed occasional smearing on stool , with 2 separate incidents on different day where bold was noticeable when I wipe and in toliet. Surgeon has me watching as this can happen as you heal. I m to keep monitoring and not worry. Does this sound right?
If you are after total colectomy than it is possible for your intestine to act like that. After such surgery, small intestine needs to take function of the large intestine. It takes time as the mucosa of the small intestine needs to grow pretending the large intestine mucosa. It is also possible that your problem can be a result of narrow anastomosis( intestine connection). If so, it might need another surgery but it is far too early to say.
So if your symptoms will last for more that 3 months after the surgery, you need a colonoscopy to verify if there is anything wrong.
Hope this will help.
Regards.
