Strange Painful Lump On The Gum At The Back Of Mouth. What's This ?
Hi i have a strange lump on the gum at the back of my mouth - my gum has been uncomfortable there for a while (few months) but I wouldn t say painful and lump is recent. When i pressed down on the top of it earlier this white stuff started coming through a hole at the side of the gum (facing into the mouth). It seems a little strange. My last tooth has always caused irritation at the back so i don t know if this makes a difference. I went to the dentist a couple of days ago and she took x-rays to check for tooth decay but everything was all okay and my wisdom tooth on that side showed up that it was still really embedded in the gum. I m not sure what this is and whether it is worth going back to the dentist??
Hi,
Welcome to the forum.
The most common reason behind gum swelling in the back of your mouth is inflammation. When you try hard to remove food particles trapped between your teeth with a toothpick, it might scratch your gum causing it to swell. The gum gets infected and it becomes more susceptible to bacterial growth.
Oral hygiene is important to avoid suffering from such problems.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you

hi and welcome,
After reading your history i suspect the gum overlying your wisdom tooth is inflammed with pain and sensitivity, this condition is called as pericoronitis.
Wisdom tooth is the last tooth to erupt in oral cavity as the area is difficult to clean and often susceptible to infection and pus formation.
As you have mentioned white discharge is the abscess coming from gum pocket.
I would suggest you to maintain good oral hygiene using antiseptic mouthwash like betadine or chlorhexidine and keep the area clean to prevent further damage.
If this doesnt help , you need to visit a dentist and get the gum pocket excised surgically to remove the infection and encourage eruption of wisdom tooth, this is called as operculectomy.
i hope this helps,
take care
After reading your history i suspect that you have developed infection around the gums of wisdom tooth.
Wisdom tooth is the last tooth to errupt in the oral cavity and the area is difficult to clean and often leads to food deposition nad bacterial accumalation of the overlying gums known as Pericoronitis.
I would suggest you to maintain a good oral hygiene, avoid food accumulation in the area, use antiseptic mouthwash rinses twice daily.
If it doesnt help than take an x-ray either get the wisdom tooth removed or get the gum pocket excised surgically to guide the erruption of wisdom tooth ,the procedure is called as operculectomy.

Hello,
Thanks for writing in.
The lump and white stuff discharging thro- the gums may be due to-
Infected pericoronal flap which is inflamed due to impacted wisdom tooth underlying.
Based on the space available for tooth eruption, wisdom teeth has to be either extracted or flap overlying tooth has to be removed to enhance tooth eruption.
Maintain good oral hygiene.
Rinse frequently using warm saline and betadine.
Rinse mouth after every meals.
Take complete course of antibiotics-analgesics too.
Hope this helps.
