Stress Fracture In Tibia, Swelling And Pain. Had Ankle IM Rod Fusion. Done CAT Scan. Is There A Way To Be Pain Free?

My husband had ankle IM rod fusion surgery in early April this year...a result of an injury 10 years ago which involved surgery with hardware back then. While recovering and walking pain free for a couple of months (no pain and no pain meds) he began having a pain where one of the new screws were placed....determined to be a stress fracture in the tibia. The hardware was removed after it was supposedly determined that his ankle was completely fused which we believe was not the case. The hardware was removed a month ago.....now that staples have been removed and weight can be applied with a boot, he is in as much pain and has as much swelling as before the fusion surgery. Any advice as to what to expect? He went in today for another CAT scan....apparently not ALL the ankle had fused before the hardware was removed. It's almost like he is back at square one. Is there any hope for being pain free again?

Hi, after the removal of the screws he needs physiotherapy, for at least a month. the swelling can be takled by putting the foot in raised position while sleeping.
By the time the pain gets ease he can have supportive therapy .
I to my patient with such symptoms prescribe neurotropic injections for 10 consecutive days. ofloxacin, and antiinflamatory drugs.
