Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

This is just to educate you that PRIMARY gout is of genetic origin and this is the reason why it runs in families. It has got nothing to do with your food habits. Whereas SECONDARY gout occurs due to various reasons and food habits being one of them.

Zyloric (allopurinol) is meant to keep your uric acid levels at an optimum level. Febuxostat is a new drug which is more effective than allopurinol in controlling the uric acid levels. The desirable range of uric acid is less than 6mg/dl.

Acute flare ups of gouty episodes followed by symptom free period is very typical of Gout.

The commonly used NSAID's in the treatment of Acute gout are Indomethacin & Naproxen sodium, though other drugs are also found to be equally good. If the symptoms are very severe, then corticosteroids are also indicated.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
