Suffering With GERD, Depression, Get Yellow Mucus On Wiping Post BM. Any Thoughts?

Hi! For the last 24 hours, I have had yellow mucus (foul smelling) on my toilet paper when I wipe after a BM. What is in the toilet is not yellow, but brown. Over the past month, I have had trouble with constipation and abdominal cramping and bloating on my right side. I never feel like I "go" completely even though it is daily. I sometimes get diarrhea and suffer from anxiety/depression and GERD. I am a 26 year old female. Any thoughts? Thank you!

Hi.
Thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.

Passing lot of mucus in stools could be due to one of the following reasons.
1. irritable bowel syndrome
2. ulcerative colitis.
3. bacterial infections and
4. crohn's disease.

Irritable bowel syndrome is due to visceral hypersensitivity. It may either be constipation dominant or diarrhea dominant. Voluminous pus and mucus in stools is a feature of ulcerative colitis. Bacterial infections like Salmonella or Shigella is always accompanied by fever and diarrhea but not constipation. In crohn's there will be diarrhea with blood and mucus.

Except IBS in all other conditions there will be only diarrhea and constipation is seldom seen. The feeling of incomplete emptying, anxiety/depression, abdominal cramps and bloating are all suggestive of IBS. Colonoscopy is diagnostic in crohn's and ulcerative colitis and stools test will confirm the diagnosis of bacterial infection.

You should consult a gastroenterologist for confirmation of diagnosis. Probiotics like Lactobacillus will help to control the diarrhea. Anti depressants are also helpful in IBS.

I hope this is useful to you.
