Suggest Cause And Remedy For Discomfort In The Esophagus

Hi there! I've been in Uganda for a month now, taking doxycycline for malaria prevention. About two days ago I got a feeling like something was caught in my esophagus, sort of behind my breast bone, and it won't go away. It feels like something is lodged, but I'm quite sure it's not - I've had lots to drink and eaten since, and also tried coughing. A friend told me the doxy might have burned a hole in my esophagus. Help please!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You may be suffering from esophagitis or GERD or esophageal spasms.

Until examination is done, it is difficult to say what it is. Avoid spicy food, alcohol, smoking and caffeinated drinks.

Doxycycline probably won't cause perforation of esophagus. Use Pantaprazole but consult your physician for prescription.

If symptoms do not improve, please consult your doctor who will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
