Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 91 years old and healthy. But Doctor says I have little high blood pressure (170/80).Can I knmow what should be the blood pressure at this age ? Thank you.
Hi Hypertension is very common in old age. Most common cause is essential hypertension ( as a part of again). The desired target of blood pressure in your age is less than 150/90 mm Hg. First step in treatment of hypertension is dietary restrictions of salt and exercise. If bp not controlled with these measures, you may need drugs for that. Diuretics, calcium channel blockers, ACEI and ARBs are the group of first line treatment. I suggest you to consult your doctor, because these drug should be started and monitored by a doctor. Also, before starting treatment , you need to get some basic investigations done as this will help to rule out other causes of hypertension and related complications and are also essential as a baseline record before starting treatment.
Thank you
