Suggest Medication For Itching And Pain Caused By Shingles

I have shingles on the left side of my head. Very painful. I had 3 shots of cortisone in the nerves, and one in the rear. Still painful, but what I don t like is the itching. I have shaved my head, and tried putting cream for itching, but end having to wash it out, sometimes in the middle of the night, Is there a spray on or liquid I can use just for itching? I also take prednisone, and Gabapentin. Any help? from Carol

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Carol,

The pain and itching in the nerves of the left side of your head are related to shingle complication called "post-herpetic neuralgia". Apart taking prednisone and Gabapentin, I'd suggest to ask your doctor to prescribe opioid painkillers.

Next, I advise to apply capsaicin cream or patches locally to relieve pain or itching of the nerves.

Wish fast recovery!
