Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am sorry to hear about your mother and her recent joint pains. She sounds like she has been self medicating with over the counter medications but these have not been helpful.
Joint pain has numerous causes and the most common is arthritis. In my practice arthritis is very common and quite disabling. I would recommend that she see a family practice doctor to do a full history and physical to help diagnose her type of arthritis.
In the mean time there are options for her to help reduce her pain. First is that she needs to remain active either walking swimming, yoga or tai chi. Staying active helps the body heal and maintains strong bones and muscles.
She may also take glucosamine twice a day but this will take several weeks to be affective. she can also take anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen or Naprosyn to reduce pain. Some people have tried and get relief with topical arthritis creams but they are less likely to help.
