I stubbed the toe next to the little toe on my left foot last June. It swelled and there was immediate deep bruising that spread around the base of that toe and up the top of the foot approx 3 inches. The emergency doctor did not feel it necessary and said it was broken. He said there was nothing that could be done and no reason to wrap it. I could not wear a shoe due to the pain. It still hurts, swelling not totally gone, and there is occasional loss of feeling in that toe spreading now to other toes. This morning I noted a red area on the top of the toe and a hardening like a growth underneath it. Almost like the healing of the break continues to grow, if that makes sense. I am concerned that there may be an infection causing the redness and other symptoms. Would it be reasonable to go to my doctor and request a referral to a specialist for this toe? I have Type 2 diabetes with oral medication. I have RA in the early stage and receiving treatment for it. Thank you for your time.
Feeling numbness and pain is due to trauma caused to your toe. It will subside by time. To judge if the toe is infected or not, I should ask to have a photo of the affected toe. If signs of infection are present, oral antibiotics are necessary together with local treatment.
