Suggest Remedies For Gestational Diabetes, stiffness And Pain In Wrists

Hi doctor, I am 41 y/o and this is my first pragnancy. My weight gain is 14kgs now and baby is very active. I have Gestational Diabetes and on insulin. My both hands are stiff since 20 week pregnancy; now since week 33, my two wrists hurt too. Is this only pregnancy thing? what should I do? Thanks!

Hi,

Stiffness and pain in hands and especially in wrist joints during the second half of pregnancy ,indicate Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. It is due collection of excess fluid in the tissues of the joints of hand. This is a temporary issue of pregnancy and will go away after delivery. Simple massages ,moving from fingers towards elbow ,can be tried to releive pain. Pain killers are not advisable in the final weeks as it can affect the baby. But Paracetamol can be used to provide symptomatic releif.
You could consult a physiotherapist to show you exercises to reduce pain.

Usually upto 11 kgs of weight gain is seen in a normal full term pregnacy in an averagely built women.Since you have already gained 14 kilos it could be a concern.

Please get your recent sugars checked (if not done in last 2 weeks )as this weight could indicate an inadequately controlled diabetes, which could affect the pregnancy.Usually control of sugars in the last few weeks is difficult to achieve and proper adjustment of insulin dose will be required.

Kindly see your Obstetrician /Physician for control of sugars,an ultrasound to check baby weight can also help to know if baby is also gaining excess weight or excess fluid is being collected around the baby which is called polyhydramnious. In these situations delivery may have to be timed early.

Hope this helps.
Regards.
