Suggest Remedy For Bad Smell From Nose

Nathalie, 34. About 2 month ago, i started to get a very strong and foul smell in my nose. The smell was particularly bad during the first week only. I did sinus rinces as well as a course of antibiotics. The smell is mostly gone, at least to the extent I feel that people around me would not perceive it while they definitely did during the first week. But I still regularly get this feeling of a bad smell but usuallly blowing my nose and getting out a boggie is enough to stop it. They are strange looking as even though they do not seem to come from the nasal cavity but from the sinus they are kind of big and dry, flat with fresh greenish mucus on top. I am wondering is this would seem famliar and if you would have any feedbak. I have been blowing one of these strange boggie about 3/4 times a day 4 the past 2 month. A part from that, I have no pain and my nose is not blocked. Thanks a million for your precious help.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history of a 34 year old female about bad smell from nose, big scabs from nose with greenish color and so on, took a course of antibiotic and did sinus rinses. This is a problem that is classically known as atrophic rhinitis wherein the blood supply to the nasal mucosa is hampered thereby causing scabbing, infection and bad smell.

This disease is most common in females of your age and can be due to hormonal problems, genetic factors and so on. Since the disease involves the nasal mucosal changes the treatment is typical and needs a lots of care and treatment for a long time and surgery if the medical management fails. Many of the patients need iron and folic acid replacement for the associated anemia. Multivitamins and mineral with trace elements are needed. Local nasal cleaning with soda-bi-carbonate solution is needed. Long treatment for months is required and gives positive result in most of the cases.

Repeated courses of antibiotics only if there is evidence of infection. There is a typical surgery in failed cases wherein tone nasal passage is blocked for about a year and may find useful in many a cases.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
