Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
88yr old woman with severe pain in leg from ankle to hip, worse during night. xray showed osteoporosis, arthritis and calcium deposits. Has had mini strokes and is on medication.GP says there is nothing she can take for pain that wont affect medication she is already taking. Please advise
She will benefit from measures such as simple exercises (walking in waist high water is a very good exercise for the elderly with knee problems), calcium & vitamin supplements (especially Vitamin D3), balanced diet, as active a lifestyle as she can maintain, gentle massage and warm water bath at night. If she has problem sleeping at night, she should avoid sleeping in day time. Check with GP about the pain medication again. If you think she is depressed, consult a psychiatrist. Hope this answer is helpful.
