Suggest Remedy For Phlegmy Cough In Tobacco Chewers

After smoking for 45 yrs., my husband quit. He then started chewing leaf tobacco. He has a terrible phlegmy cough. The cough subsided when he tried the nicotine gum. Then he gave up and went back to the chewing tobacco. I am very concerned about the cough that has returned. He coughs many times a day, every day. Could this be a serious lung or throat condition?
