Suggest Remedy For Swollen And Red Penis In Infant
Hi my son is 10 months old and has a cold this week. Since he cant blow his mucus from his nose, he has been swallowing it and therefore his poo is very watery and yesterday he pooed 8 times. This morning he woke looking better though after his morning sleep, I noticed his penis was very swollen and red and very sore. I have taken him to the doctor and they gave me some cream to put up the shaft of the penis and said he may have to be circumsized. Should I be very worried about his penis? I am scared I am not getting the correct advice.
Your baby is having a condition called acute balanitis- infection or inflammation of the glans penis. You need not worry. Apply the cream as advised. Plus, you can give paracetamol three times daily for 3 days to relieve soreness and pain. If not getting better by 2 days, please get back to your doctor as we may need addition of an oral antibiotic too.
Circumcision is needed only in recurrent cases or if he develops phimosis (tight foreskin), an unusual complication of balanitis. Meanwhile, keep good local hygiene, wash the area with salted lukewarm warm water 3 times a day, before applying cream. Regarding bowel habit, there is nothing to worry, it will get back to normal in 2-3 days.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
