Suggest Therapy For Bulimia

I am bulimic and am seeing a psychiatrist tomorrow. I am told he is not familiar with eating disorders but he was the soonest appointment I could find. I have been bulimic for six years and it has spiraled out of control. My family had debated sending me to a homeless shelter just days earlier because this is something they can no longer tolerate. My question for you is: does adderall (or a prescription of similar affect) a good aid in helping with this? I have taken it in the past and it stopped me from binging competely.

Hello. The first thing you would need to do is get a thorough evaluation and get properly diagnosed. It is a good thing in that sense, that you are seeing a psychiatrist because he or she can properly diagnose you. If you have AD/HD which Adderall is used for, that may have been the reason you felt better while on it. Adderall is a psychostimulant used for attention deficit problems. It is not used to treat bulimia itself.

I would strongly suggest that you see a therapist for your eating disorder so that you can learn coping skills and ways to treat your bulimia. You must be aware that binging and purging can have very serious negative effects to your health. If your electrolytes are imbalances, you could suffer a heart attack very easily. You really need to have a full medical exam to rule out any medical problems that you may have as a result of your bulimia. You have been suffering a long time and you really owe it to yourself to obtain proper treatment. Good luck to you.
