Suggest Treatment For Lisinipril Withdrawl Side Effects

I have been taking Lisinipril and HCTz. I felt okay but I have had HBP for a few years. Anywhere between 145-160/ 89-103. I was talked into taking these meds. before I had a stroke. This was a big mistake. I started with a cough right away ( I cannot stop). I have been off the lisinipril for 2wks and was started on Norvasc. I still cough and I have been having major anxiety and feel horrible. I have heart palpitations and at times feel like my heart is going to explode. I thought I was going crazy. I went in for thyroid blood test to see if that is making me feel so horrible. I know that it could not be causing my cough. I got on this site and found that many others our experiencing the same symptoms as myself. How long will I have this cough. I feel like I just want to be put to sleep. I need to have some answers. The doctor who gave me these meds. said I have never heard of such a thing . I told him that the cough is one of the first symptoms on the paper that you get from the pharmacy. I called the pharmacist and they told me this is very common but did not tell me all of the other symptoms that I am experiencing. What can I do and how long will this last?

Hi,

It is quite obvious that your cough initially was due to Lisinipril which is a common side effect of these medications (prils, ACE inhibitors). Chronic cough can be caused by many other underlying conditions such as GERD (heart burn), other medications, chronic chest infections (in smokers), throat or larynx infections and of course psychological cough is another option, you can begin with investigating for GERD (Gastro esophageal reflux disease) Upper endoscopy according to your physician. Thyroid conditions are less likely cause chronic cough although they have direct relationship with palpitations so in order to find exact cause of palpitations thyroid function test can be done (TSH, free T4). Norvasc doesnt have anything to do with cough. After taking off the lisinipril from the list cough should resolve within couple of days, if not we must look for other conditions as mentioned above. Age, smoking history, sex, medication history and previous procedures on throat(Tonsillectomy etc) or thyroid (Laser procedures in thyroid nodules) are important to mention in detail for future consultation with a doctor. I would rather recommend to start a small dose of Presartan 25 mg daily instead of Norvasc for your moderate blood pressure. Please Feel free to write for future assistance.
