Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Since 2002 I have been taking various forms of bone building medicines, for short durations. Evista, actonel, cacirol with calcium nasal sprays, gemcal and salmoncal. I have now been advised to take fosavance once a week. I am 67 years old and have osteoporosis in my spine, and osteopenia elsewhere. Please advise
Hi, You have taken plenty of osteoporosis medications and also for short duration. You have been discontinued from various treatments. You had been started on the biphosphonate group of medication earlier and now you are back again to the same group. Regular medication is essential and duration is important. Assessment of bone mineral density after 2 years of treatment is essential to evaluate the progression. Hormonal therapy can also be tried along with Vitamin D and calcium supplementation. Muscle strength needs to be improved, so you can take the support of physiotherapist to improve it. Try to make your house elderly friendly as it can avoid any sort of falls which could make you bed ridden. Bed ridden patients have extensive osteoporosis due to low mobility. Mobility slows progression of osteoporosis. Continue the treatment and do a followup bone mineral density test for evaluation purpose. If you have any further queries, happy to help again.
