Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, My wife had PIH (Pregnancy induced Hypertension). Since her blood pressure was not getting controlled, she was operated. She gave birth to 26 weeks old baby boy. Baby is kept in incubator. Doctor told that baby has a cyst of 5MM. One week later doctor told me that it has grown to 8MM. But doctor assured me that i shouldn't worry as it's only single cyst and also not on very sensitive area of brain. I feel very worried thinking that it will create some abnormilities in my child. Please advice.
Thanks for posting your query on HealthCareMagic. 26 weeks is preterm and premature. The lining of blood vessels in the brain is thin and prone to bleeding on minor changes in the environment. At times such germinal matrix bleeding occurs. The brain tissue in that region gets resorbed creating a fluid filled empty space what you see as a cyst. With further resorption, the cyst can increase in size. An infant brain is quite plastic and the function of the affected area generally gets redistributed to other areas and often no disability occurs. Moreso if it is not in a sensitive area of the brain there is less cause of worry. You need not worry at the moment. Keep the baby in follow up in a centre with neurodevelopmental monitoring facilities. Early developmental stimulation should take care of the matter.
Hope this helps. Feel free to revert back in case of further queries if any.
5 mm cyst does appear to be quite a small cyst, although it is important to know a) if it is in a location that is critical, would help to scan the report or scan b) Followup scans at 3 monthly intervals to check if the cyst is increasing in size are important
very large cysts can sometimes communicate wit the ventricle system of the brain and they may need shunt surgery, however, a 5 mm cyst may not require anyting but careful followup with your doctor and regular scans fo the first few months of life
