Hi, I have a mild case of hyperpigmentation/acne scarring. I don't know which term to use. The scarring isn't engraved into my skin, it's just really dark but small discolorations scattered throughout my face. I was wondering if you knew of a topical OTC product I could use? I have heard of Revitol, Nucelle, and M2, but don't know which I should get. Thanks.
Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic
You seem to have post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation /PIH which is a non-specific reaction to any inflammatory insult to the skin e.g inflammatory acne. PIH is common in skin of color at sites of previous acne, is level with the surronding skin unlike acne scars which are irregularities of the surface of skin. If I was the treating doctor I would suggest you to use a pigment lightening ingredient like either azaleic acid, hydroquinone, glycolic acid, kojic acid etc once or twice daily. These ingredients are available either alone or in various combinations on prescription of a dermatologist. The mechanism of action of these ingredients is either exfoliation of existing pigment or inhibition of synthesis of new pigment / melanin or both. You may also opt for a few sessions of glycolic acid chemical peeling from your nearest dermatologist.
