I had a tooth extracted, and subsequently started biting the side/underside of my tongue, which I believe led to my developing a ranula. I've had a consultation with an oral maxillofacial surgeon, who would operate to remove the cyst. I was a bit overwhelmed with our conversation and don't remember or didn't quite understand everything he said. He did say marsupialization, and he also said it was likely that the ranula would return after the first surgery because of the size of the cyst and the thinness of the tissue, but that a second surgery if the recurring cyst was caught small enough could be removed. I've also read that these ranula tend to return with just marsupialization and that the sublingual gland needs to be removed to prevent recurrence. What is the "standard" procedure for ranula removal and what is the success rate? Do I even need to have it removed? Is the sublingual gland commonly removed? What are the risks?
