Suggest Treatment For Chest Pain And Swollen Ankle

Hi,I m a 37 y/o Female,5 6/115 pds,BP normally runs on the low-side.I m Asthmatic.I smoke about 1-2 packs a day [I know!];& I have a Maternal Grandfather w/2 Heart Attacks;& a Paternal Grandfather w/a Major Stroke. My diet is on the *poor* side, drink a lot of Coffee. For almost a week now I ve been experiencing swollen-ankles.My mother is an RN,so we narrowed it down [no excess water/salt in my diet],& were left with CHF.Now I have lung-congestion without a doubt, but being Asthmatic obviously would make that a somewhat *norm* for me;but NOT this swelling.I haven t noticed any *excess* fagtiuge though. However I have had some *numbness* in my right-arm since the ankle-swelling began;& some chest pain on & off for a month or so;nothing *really painful*,but noticeable. Any thoughts would be SO appreciated;thank you so much! :-)

General & Family Physician 's  Response
These symptoms are very concerning for some form of heart or kidney disease. Of course it would be good for you to stop smoking and be on a healthy low salt diet. However, the most important thing right now is for you to see a doctor and get an evaluation to make sure everything is okay with your heart and kidneys. Problems with either heart or kidneys can cause swelling and fatigue. You are very young for either of these problems but you really need to be checked by a doctor as soon as possible.
