Hi there! Your mother has hypothyroidism and depression. Both disorders are known to coexist in many patients. If her depression is entirely due to hypothyroidism then you should see an improvement in depressive symptoms with improvement in thyroid function as assessed by doing thyroid function tests. So the first step for you is get her FT3, FT4 & TSH done. If the reports turn out normal the next step would be a detailed psychiatric examination. In similar cases I generally prescribe antidepressants like escitalopram, fluoxetine etc. with favorable results. Hope this helps. Do write in if you need further information Best of luck!
