It has many causes and some of them include obstruction of bile flow or absence of bile production and some other chronic diseases. If I were your treating doctor, I would ask for an abdominal scan (scan the liver, pancreas and biliary tree) and some laboratory tests like liver function test, bilirubin concentration in blood, HIV status) to role out common causes.
